The Artist’s Journey: “Why the interest in Asian art?” is the most commonly asked question of me. Well, I am a product of my mid-western upbringing. Born and raised in a small rural community, where life was simple and wildlife plentiful, I developed a love of nature and found tranquility in the minimalistic design of life.
Education, travel, and employment with international companies led me to a place where opportunity and experience became manifest by becoming introduced to oriental culture on a professional level. While entrenched in the workforce competing with Japanese manufactured product, productivity standards, Musashi, and management styles, I entertained the idea of embarking upon a personal level as well, and explore from a another perspective the Asian culture. Little did I know where this immersion would lead me, and how immensely rewarding the saturation would be.
The Journey has taken me on a study of Tai Kwon Do philosophy and form, Japanese architecture and fashion design, opera, tradition and symbolism, ikebana; all culminating with sumi-e and oriental brush painting. It took several years of searching to connect with an oriental brush painting mentor; one who would be instrumental in advancing my love for Asian art. This mentor has taught me about life and how to express the experience with various oriental brush painting techniques. Most of my paintings’ techniques have been inspired by contemporary artists, with the emergence of my own style developing into its “O”wn along the Journey.
